가족이 모인 휴대전화 대화창에는 구성원들의 안녕을 바라는 메시지가 오갑니다. 이때 주고받는 이미지 파일은 재미있고 흥미롭습니다. 세상의 온갖 좋은 말들을 그러모은 텍스트와 고색창연한 이미지를 조합해 만든 이런 밈(meme)에는 가족의 행복을 비는 정성스러운 마음이 담겨 있습니다. 유전자를 공유한 구성원들의 안녕은 아주 오랜 기원의 대상이기도 합니다. ‘참 좋은 아침’에서는 글꼴 디자이너와 사진가가 각각 ‘안녕의 인사’를 구성하는 두 축인 텍스트와 이미지를 사용해 그들이 받아본 메시지에 따뜻한 화답을 보냅니다. 인터넷 밈뿐 아니라 안녕의 인사가 오가는 실제 시공간을 생각해보면 아무래도 명절 아침 차례상이 먼저 떠오릅니다. 병풍 앞에 차려진 다정한 모습의 오래된 TV들과 그 안에 담긴 메시지를 통해 조롱거리처럼 여겨지는 특정 종류의 밈을, 또는 가족끼리 주고받는 뻔한 인사말을 다른 시선으로 바라볼 기회를 얻으면 좋겠습니다.

인사말과 덕담, 미신과 잔소리의 경계를 미묘하게 오가는 어르신들의 안부 묻기. 조선 중기 학자들의 기록에도 “가족들의 잔소리가 지겹다.”라는 구절이 남아 있다 하니 기술의 발전으로 형태만 바뀌어왔을 뿐 사랑하는 사람들에게 어떤 식으로든 애정 어린 참견을 보내고픈 마음은 이어져 내려오고 있습니다. 텍스처 온 텍스처의 하나부터 열까지 다 널 위한 소리는 글자와 그림이 결합한 민화인 문자도의 형식으로 어르신들의 생각과 염원과 미의식을 재해석합니다. 문자도의 주된 주제인 ‘효제충신예의염치’, 즉 ‘부모에게 효도하고 형제 간 우애를 다지며 나라에 충성하 신의를 잊지 말고 예의 바르고 청렴하게 살 것’은 어르신 짤이 내포한 수많은 의미와 맞닿아 있습니다. 가족들이 좋아하리라 짐작하며 보내는 ‘어르신 짤’ 속의 여러 상징과 요소—꽃, 풀, 약재, 건강 식품 등—들이 획과 획 속에 자리 잡으며 잔소리의 표면을 아름답게 만듭니다. 한편, ‘소불근학노후회’(少不勤 學老後悔)는 잔소리의 대표격인 고사성어로 젊을 때 부지런히 배우지 않으면 늙어서 후회한다는 다소 서늘한 일침을 담고 있습니다.
Older people ask after people as they subtly cross the lines between greetings — words of blessing, superstitions, and nagging (jansori). Even records from scholars in the mid-Joseon period show that they were tired of family members nagging them, so we can see that people have always wanted to offer affectionate messages in one way or another, although its style has changed due to the development of technology. Jan-sori now takes the form of pictorial ideographs (munjado), reinterpreting the thoughts, aspirations, and aesthetics of senior citizens. The main theme of munjado is to “be faithful to your parents, strengthen brotherhoods, be loyal to your country, never forget your fidelity, and live with good manners and integrity.” These are all connected with many meanings of senior citizen memes. Various symbols and elements in senior citizen memes (which the elderly send while expecting their family members will gladly receive them), such as flowers and grass, medicinal herbs and healthy foods, are placed in the strokes of the text, making the surface of the “nagging” more beautiful. The Chinese phrase “少不勤學 老後悔” is a well-known idiom, and something considered as nagging by the younger generation. It means that if you don’t study hard when you are young, you will regret it when you are old.
